Coleman, of Evart (formerly of Waterford), passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019 at his residence at Evergreen Terrace in Big Rapids, Michigan. He was 92. Mr. Coleman was born July 4, 1926 in Drakesboro, Kentucky to Ervin and Carrie (Travis) Coleman.

The second child born of four, the Coleman’s later moved and resided in Dunmor, KY. Mr. Coleman was a cousin to the late Country Music Legend, Merle Travis, who is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Guy grew up and worked on the railroad until joining the Army in 1944 and was sent to service in WWII in the Philippines.

He lost his elder brother, Edward Coleman, on Omaha Beach in Normandy. He returned home to Kentucky in 1946. Mr. Coleman moved to Michigan in 1948 after the war to find employment in the auto industry.

He worked for General Motors Truck and Bus Group and later became a benefits representative for the U.A.W. He worked for GM 45 years, retiring in 1993. Guy loved playing golf, and bowling on a league.

He loved the outdoors and going hunting along with singing Country Music and playing the guitar. He enjoyed caring for his beloved cats and watching the Detroit Tiger and Detroit Red Wings. Guy was truly one in a million, dependable friend, wonderful husband, father, and the best grandfather (Papa) anyone could ask for, but only dream of having.

Mr. Coleman was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, who both gave their lives serving our country, Edward Coleman (WWII), Bill Coleman (Vietnam), and his beloved baby sister, Jo-nell Walters (Coleman), along with his first wife, Ramona (Turner) Demas, with whom he had one daughter, Pamela G. Coleman. Mr. Coleman lost his beloved wife of 49 years, Mrs. Ila Mae Coleman in 2015, with whom he gained a wonderful step-son, Mr. Roland Phelps. Guy H. Coleman is survived by his daughter, Pamela G. Coleman Perez (Edward) of Flintstone, GA, his granddaughter, Tiffanie G. Smith of Flintstone, GA, his step-son, Roland (Gladys) Phelps of Evart, MI, granddaughters Diane (Bruce) Brackett of Sears, Marcia (Scott) Truxton-Frye of Norton Shores, MI, Patricia Bell of Big Rapids, grandsons, Andrew Phelps of Grand Rapids, David (Cheri) Phelps of Lowell, Kevin (Sandy) Phelps of Clarkston, Alan Phelps of Marion, Randy (Nancy) Phelps of Ada, and Thomas (Amy) Bell of Greenville.

Guy and Ila had 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great granddaughters. Guy is also survived by his nephews, Billy Joe (Melissa) Coleman and Randy (Michelle) Coleman of Kentucky, and his nieces Dee (Rodney) Nelson of White Lake, MI and Susie (Greg) Carr of Almont, MI. Guy H. Coleman, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, a wonderful man who touched so many lives, and forever will be in our hearts.

Funeral services honoring the life of Guy H. Coleman will be 1:00pm Monday, January 7th at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart. Visitation is Monday 11:00am until time of services. Mr. Coleman will be interred next to his wife, Ila, in Sylvan Township Cemetery, Osceola Co., MI, with full military honors.
