Inez I. Steinkamp, 91, of Beatrice died at her home on Thursday, June 28, 2018. She was born on December 1, 1926 to John H. and Magna S. (Christenson) Schonewise in the rural Adams area. She attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Adams High School in 1944.

She was baptized and confirmed at the age of 21 at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice. She married Fred Steinkamp, Jr. on May 5, 1946 at the American Lutheran Church of Filley. She taught rural schools for four… Read More » years and they then moved to Filley where she helped Fred in the Filley Public Schools and worked part-time at the Filley Post Office.

They moved to Beatrice in 1951. In 1960, they moved to the Gage County Jail which was part of the job then known as the Sheriff’s Department. Her husband, Fred was the Sheriff.

She then became the cook, matron jailor and part-time radio operator and office help for 22 years. After leaving the jail, she worked at Grandma’s Fruit Cake for ten years. She was a former member of the American Lutheran Church of Filley and had been a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice where she did volunteer work and was a past member of Tabitha Circle.

She was also a member of BPO Does #10. She was a volunteer at the Bargain Box from 1991 until recently and also at Homestead Monument. She enjoyed yard work, gardening, reading, sewing, playing cards and traveling with Fred.

Survivors include one son, Kent (Terri) Steinkamp of Beatrice; one daughter, Kathryn (Greg) Fisher of Maryville, MO; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Steinkamp of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Beth (Eddie) Meyers, Bryan Steinkamp, Eric (Mollie) Steinkamp, William (Jodi) Fisher and Henry (Jackie) Fisher; four great-grandchildren, Marissa and Vincent Meyers, Kingston and Maddix Steinkamp, one sister, June (Bill) Loseman, of Beatrice; one sister-in-law, Tena Steinkamp of Wilber; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Magna (Christenson) Schonewise; her husband Fred, who died July 18, 2003; one son, Keith Steinkamp, who died on March 19, 1996; six siblings and spouses, Edith (Pete) Lidolph, Gladys (Lawrence) Howe, Louise (Merle) Kerns, Ruby (Paul) Claassen, Charles (Hazel) Schonewise and John (Dorothy) Schonewise; brother-in-law, Wilber Mosiman. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 2, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice with Pastor Greg Gabriel officiating.

A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 A.M. Monday in the chapel of the church. Inurnment of the cremains will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery of rural Pickrell at 2:00 P.M. Monday. A memorial has been established to the family for future designation.

Visitation will be held at Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice fom 12:00 noon until 9:00 P.M. Sunday with the family meeting and greeting friends and relatives from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. www. foxfuneralhome.net Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
