Irene Szakacs May 14, 1928 – March 13, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card It is with great sadness that the family of Irene (Bencsik) Szakacs announce her passing on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Doylestown Hospital. She was 90 years old and a longtime resident of New Britain and Souderton. Born in Philadelphia, Irene was the daughter of the late Simon and Julia P. (Faczekas) Bencsik and beloved wife of the late James Szakacs with whom she shared 29 years of marriage.

A graduate of Souderton Area High School (Class of 1946), Irene was a co-owner for many years of the former Hills Manufacturing Company, Inc. in New Britain, PA. She worked as a shampooist at local hair salons until she retired. She enjoyed helping others and volunteering in the Same Day Surgery Unit at Doylestown Hospital.

Irene was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and was witty, compassionate and selfless. She was happiest when spending time with family and friends.

An enthusiastic knitter, Irene donated her handmade hats, scarves and afghans to family, friends and disadvantaged children and veterans. She was an avid Phillies fan and almost never missed watching a game. She loved gardening, BINGO, and listening to her favorite singer Tom Jones.

She was an excellent Hungarian cook and baker but also loved to go out to breakfast at her favorite restaurant, Zoto’s. She dearly loved her pets, including her dog Fluffy and cats Smokey, Charlotte and Tiger. Irene will be lovingly remembered by her children, son Steve S. Szakacs (Marjorie) of Doylestown, PA; her four daughters, Julie A. Kollar of North Wales, PA, Barbara I. Lipson (Harvey) of Chalfont, PA, Donna E. White of Colmar, PA, Mary E. Szakacs of Lansdale, PA; her 10 grandchildren – Brian, Martin, and Daniel Szakacs, Michael Kollar, Mandy Cichanowsky (Gene), Joshua Lipson (Georgie), Amy Riley (Patrick), James Szakacs, Jr. (Luisa), Jeffrey Szakacs (Jennifer), and Jerry Clinton (Laura); her 14 great-grandchildren – EJ, Owen, Daniel, Florence, Lyla, Tyler, Tara, Tahlia, Toby, Clayton, Lauren, Dylan, Harrison, and Alfred.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James R. Szakacs; her son-in-law, T. Wayne White and her three brothers, Laszlo, Frank and Simon “Shim” Bencsik. Family and friends are invited to Irene’s Life Celebration from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, Saturday, March 30, at Derstine Run, Building 1, 2nd Floor Community Room, 84 Derstine Road, Hatfield, PA 19440. A private inurnment will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
