Irene’s Obituary Irene W Krumwiede age 95, was welcomed into the loving arms of God on February 10, 2019 under the compassionate care of hospice and the staff of Souris Valley Care Center, Velva. Irene Grindberg was born on January 23, 1924 to Ole and Mary (Hammer) Grindberg at Velva. In 1942, she graduated from Velva High School.

She was employed in the office of Truax Traer Coal Co. south of Velva from September 1942 to March 1946. On March 27, 1946 she married Delbert Krumwiede. They farmed north of Voltaire with their sons, Tommy, Terry, and Danny for 38 years.

Irene was known as a hard worker and could always be found working alongside the men in her family. She was a master of all equipment. However, she could commonly be seen cooling off during harvest with a hot cup of coffee and a cookie.

Using her textbook perfect penmanship and accounting skills, she served as treasurer for the Lebanon Township and the Voltaire School District. She also served as treasurer of the South McHenry Soil Conservation for 20 years. After retirement, Delbert and Irene enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Brownsville, Texas.

Visitors to their home in Voltaire might interrupt a game of solitaire or hand stitching on a tea towel but would still be met with a friendly smile and a plate of homemade doughnuts or waffle iron turtle cookies. Her greatest enjoyment was dancing. Even in her later years she would keep time to any old time polka music.

Family was important to her and she enjoyed telling stories and laughing (with her eyes closed! ) over a glass of beer. Irene was the memory keeper in their marriage and Delbert depended on her to recall names, dates, and locations so it is sadly ironic that she suffered from dementia and memory loss in her later years.

In some ways, the dementia might be considered a blessing that allowed her to revisit her happy childhood with her close-knit family. She was a member of the Hjerdal Lutheran Church and Velva American Legion Auxiliary. Irene is survived by: her sons Tom (Linda) of Velva; Terry (Nancy) of Voltaire; and Danny of Hazen; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 6 great- great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by: her husband Delbert; sisters Clara (Elmer) Jensen and Esther (Todd) Hage; brothers: Oscar (Ellen) Grindberg, Victor (LaVina) Grindberg, Melvin (Bobbie) Grindberg, nephew-Marvin (Ingrid) Jensen. In laws; Ed (Mary) Krumwiede, William (Ellen) Krumwiede, and Art (Louise) Colby. In Lieu of flowers memorials will go to Souris Valley Care Center, Trinity Hospice Care, and Stenkjaer Cemetery,or donors choice.
