James Gordon Vaughan November 11, 1929 – January 9, 2019 James Gordon Vaughan, in his 90th year, after uncomplainingly battling Parkinson’s for 8 years passed away peacefully at his home on January 9, 2019 at 5:55 pm. He was born November 11, 1929 to James Gordon and Vera Jones Vaughan in Malad, ID at his Grandmother Jones’s home. After graduating from Malad High School and serving a mission in Australia, Gordon met and married his devoted wife Valmai Tolman in the Logan Temple.
In August they celebrated their 65th anniversary. Shortly after their marriage he was drafted into the US Army and served in FT. Hood, Texas.
Gordon graduated from USU and later, while raising a family, earned a Master’s Degree from BYU. He loved his profession of teaching seminary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He taught for 33 years in the Weber, Bonneville and Ogden Seminaries, later serving as Assistant Area Coordinator.
Dad loved the scriptures and his greatest desire was to bring people to Christ. He served faithfully and magnified his many different church callings helping others to love the gospel and scriptures. Dad and Mom served in the Ogden Temple and at the Ogden Family History Library.
They served missions to Perth, Australia and at the Church Office Building as CES missionary coordinators. He loved all of his callings and was honored to finish serving as stake patriarch. Dad and Mom enjoyed attending the temple.
Even as he lost strength and mobility they made every effort to continue serving others by attending the temple. Dad rejoiced in his posterity. Along with Mom, he taught his children the gospel by precept and example.
He loved having monthly Family Night surrounded by his children, 28 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. Surviving are his wife Valmai, children: Charles (Lori) Vaughan, RoseMarie (Jim) Jensen, Michelle (Kregg) Knight, Rex Vaughan, Lisa (Kevin deceased) Bates, Camille (Dave) Halverson, Sharon (Tim) McCall and foster son Harlow (Nora) John. He is survived by his two sisters Cheryldene Johnson Merrill and Lois (Curt) Hoskins.
He was preceded in death by his infant son James Tolman Vaughan, two grandsons Tyson Knight and Danny Vaughan and son-in-law Kevin Bates. We, as his children express our deep admiration and appreciation to our dear Mother for her many years of devoted care for our Father.
