Obituary of James Hogan James L. Hogan, 85, a lifetime Red Hook resident, died Friday, May 11, 2018 at his home. Born on May 4th, 1933, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Mary (Gallagher) Hogan. Jim was baptized into the Roman Catholic Faith, received his First Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. Christopher’s Roman Catholic Church in Red Hook.
He was a lifetime faithful communicant of St. Christopher’s and a member of their Holy Name Society. Jim graduated with honors from Red Hook Central School in 1951, where he was active in sports, music, drama, student council, and other activities. Following graduation, he served in the US Navy as a Communication Technician and was stationed for one year in Adak, Alaska.
In 1953, he began working for the National Security Agency in Washington, DC. On May 22, 1954, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Ellen Vitzthum at St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook. They have been blessed with a wonderful and loving family.
In 1956, Jim and Ellen returned to Red Hook, where Jim began working for IBM. Jim’s illustrious career spanned 33 years, starting on the typewriter manufacturing line in Kingston and culminating in his promotion to senior level analyst manager in 1979. Jim had a strong reputation as a consummate problem solver, thoughtful leader and talented manager.
A major highlight of his career was his assignment to IBM UK for a year and a half to solve critical production issues. Jim concluded his career as a Corporate Auditor before his retirement in 1989. Jim pursued many activities after leaving IBM- from travel, camping, golf, fishing, and church activities.
He always had time to assist his ever-growing family. He was also an avid New York Yankee fan. In addition to his parents, his brother, Lawrence Hogan, Jr., and his sisters-in law, Mary Hogan and Rose Vitzthum, predecease Jim.
Jim is survived by his wife Ellen Hogan of Red Hook; his daughter & son in law: Barbara (Richard) Totman and their children Daniel (Stacie) Totman, Lisa (Jared) Wagner, Kate (Vincent) La Spina, Gabor Totman, and Hannah (Jeremias Teran) Totman; his daughter & son in law: Kathleen (James) Pell and their children Thomas (Ester) Pell, and Christopher (Yanyan) Pell; his son and daughter in law: William (Sandra) Hogan, and their children, Benjamin, and Brian Hogan; his son and daughter in law: James (Sherri) Hogan and their children, Kevin, Meghan, and Daniel Hogan; and his daughter and son in law: Patricia (Thomas) Lococo and their children Caleb, Elizabeth, Joshua, Gabriela, Julia, and Addisu Lococo; his great grandchildren: Lauren, Christian, and Patrick Totman; Kaylee, Bridgette, James, and Liam Wagner; Alexia, Abigail, and Grace La Spina; and Timothy Pell. Jim is also survived by his brother in law, Lawrence Vitzthum; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. At Jim’s request, there will be no calling hours.
An evening prayer service will be held on Monday, May 14th, 2018 at 7 pm at St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at St. Christopher’s Church, Red Hook. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook.
