Jane C. Flounders, a longtime resident of Stamford, died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 21, 2018. She was 81. Jane leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, friendship, and community service.

She was an active leader in nearly every one of her pursuits; she was PFO president at Stillmeadow School; president of the Parent-Teacher Council of Stamford; president of the Westhill Chamber Singers parent group, touring with the group to China in 1982 and Austria/Hungary in 1984; a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford; and past president of the Hycliff Association. In 2007, she received the Stamford Historical Society (SHS)’s 2007 Virginia T. Davis Award for outstanding volunteer service to the organization; she had served as the Chair of the SHS (2004–2006), and was also its longtime volunteer coordinator and docent, particularly delighting in leading lively and engaging tours of the Hoyt-Barnum House. Jane was proud of completing a major archival project that comprised documents from the King, Low-Heywood, and Thomas Schools.

The archives are now in the collection of the Stamford Historical Society. She also served on the Board of Literacy Volunteers, was a substitute media specialist in the Stamford Public Schools, and worked for Pierson & Smith Insurance. As an active member of the Stamford Woman’s Club, Jane chaired the club’s 2016–18 “I Remember Stamford” project, a 52-page booklet with personal reflections on Stamford during the years 1917 to 1962 by 16 members of the Stamford Woman’s Club.

The club received a state-wide first prize Community Improvement Award for Jane’s project at the 2018 annual convention of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Connecticut. Born on August 4, 1937, in Queens, NY to Joseph and Jane A. Consolino, Jane grew up in Forest Hills and moved to Stamford with her family in 1951. She graduated from the Low-Heywood School (now King) in 1954, and from Wheaton College in Norton, MA, in 1958.

A career woman ahead of her time, after college she worked in NYC as an assistant editor for Life magazine and as a photo editor for American Heritage Publishing, where her fondest achievement was the photo research she did on the American Heritage Book of Indians. Jane met the love of her life, Burtis C. (“Burt”) Flounders, while they were both living and working in New York City. They were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford in 1964, and moved back to Stamford in 1965 to raise their family.

A dedicated mother, and a woman of uncompromising integrity and quick wit, she raised three strong, independent daughters. She sharpened the minds and polished the hearts of all with whom she interacted. She was especially proud of her “all-male quartet” of grandsons, whom she loved most dearly.

Jane was predeceased by her beloved Burt in 1998; by her brothers, Joseph T. Consolino and Robert Consolino; and by her parents. She will be missed so very much by those who survive her: her three daughters and their families: Betsy and Jeff Novak of Los Angeles; Mary and Michael Green of Stamford; Anne Flounders and Peter Devin of Stamford; grandsons Peter, David and Harrison Green, and Sam Devin; by her brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Dana Consolino of Wilmington, VT; her sisters-in-law, Carolyn Albrecht and Kathy Consolino; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial will be scheduled for a later date.
