Joel Kent Maggert, 68, of Mizpah, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in his home after a lengthy battle with cancer on June 28, 2018. Joel was born on June 17, 1950, in Alpena, MI, the son of Glen and Opal (Murphy) Maggert. He attended Northome High School where he enjoyed both football and theatre.

They owned and operated a school bus for Northome School where he showed he had a special place in his heart for all his school bus kids. He was a farmer and saw mill operator, where he was known for his hard work, dedication and putting God first in his life. Joel also had a love for politics and won a seat as Koochiching County Commissioner.

In 2013, Joel married Sharon Rickner of Cass Lake, MN with who he shared the remaining years of his life. Joel was a loving husband, father, and grandfather (Opa). In his later years, his favorite pastime was to spend time with his grandchildren teaching them about Jesus and many other invaluable life lessons.

He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his spouse, Sharon Rickner Maggert of Mizpah; 8 children, Dan (Brenda) Maggert of Northome, MN, Danielle (Dennis) Kocik of Barboursville, VA, Kim (Al) Narveson of Lino Lakes, MN, Todd (Daniele) Maggert of Lino Lakes, MN, Marti (Dusty) Waller of Northome, MN, Kristi (Brian) Dreher of Mizpah, MN, Joelene (Mark) Hettwer of Wahpeton, ND, and Sarah (Derrick) Palmer of Brooklyn Center, MN; his brothers and sisters, Jennie (Howard) Rensberry, Jan (Betty) Maggert, Jill (Eduardo) Llanes, Jed (Doris) Maggert; 23 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his spouse, Irene Maggert; his sons Daniel and Jeff Maggert; brother Jud Maggert, and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at Gemmell Community Church in Mizpah, MN, with Sheldon Johnson and Tom Winkelman officiating, with a luncheon following.
