Obituary for Mr. John S. Tomaino UTICA – Mr. John S. Tomaino, age 85, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the Masonic Care Community of NY. At the time of his passing he was in the hearts of those he loved the most. Born in Utica on December 7, 1932, John was the son of the late Bernardo and Florence (Tomaino) Tomaino.

He attended Brandegee and Conkling Elementary Schools and was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School/Class of 1951. A proud veteran of the United States Army, John served his country with honor from 1951-1954 during the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of 2 Bronze Service Stars, as well as the United Nations Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

John was employed by St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital and later by Tri-State Laundry. John was a quiet and kind man. Although he never had children himself, he knew the love of his nieces and nephew.

He loved his family and especially the holidays when they would all be together. In turn, his loved ones appreciated the wisdom and generosity they gleaned from him during his lifetime. John was an avid sports spectator.

The New York Yankees and the New York Giants were a constant of captivation and conversation for him. Frank Sinatra was his favorite singer, and “My Way” could never be played enough! At the Masonic Home, his most recent residence, he always looked forward to pitch games, bowling, and outings.

John’s spirituality was guided by the Lord, and back in the day, when his health was well, he looked forward to Sunday Mass. John is survived by his many nieces and a nephew and their families, Angela and Frank Spartano, Bernie and DeeAnne Tomaino, Michele and Phil LaScala, Florence Ann and Al Damiano, and Maryellen and Richard Hobaica; his great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, and cousins. The staff at the Masonic Care Community/Brooklyn Household were so special to him and were affectionate and respectful during his stay.

He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Frances Tomaino, and Anthony and Angela Tomaino. The family will honor and commemorate John’s life in a private gathering. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Wednesday morning at 11:00 at St. Patrick and St. Anthony Church, 3372 Oneida Street in Chadwicks where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Fr.

Mark Kaminski with Military Honors conferred. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the service. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
