Joseph L. Poli, 81, of Geddes, passed away Friday at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Syracuse to the late Lino and Anna (Matrone) Poli in 1937. He graduated from Vocational High School and served with the US Army from 1956-1959.

Joe was a Police Officer with the Solvay Police Department for 13 years after which he transferred to the Geddes Police Department for 18 years before retiring as sergeant on the midnight shift. Joe was an avid bowler, hunter and Yankee fan. He was a communicant of St. Cecilia Church, loved to travel and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Joe was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Mary Jane (Panighetti) in 2011 and son, William in 2013. He is survived by his children; Steven (Rebecca Hilts) Poli, of N. Syracuse, Karen Valentine, of Minoa, and Joseph (Tara) Poli, of Solvay, 9 grandchildren; Samantha and Sydney Valentine, Duke Pugh, Jon, Kim, Lino and Andrea Poli, Alexis Calhoun and Brenna Poli, 1 great-granddaughter; Ayla Calhoun, his brother; Daniel Poli, of N. Syracuse and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 8:45 am Tuesday at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME and 9:30 am at St. Cecilia Church, Solvay, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Burial with Military Honors will follow in Onondaga County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 pm Monday at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, 2601 Milton Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Town of Geddes PBA, PO Box 336, Solvay, NY 13209.
