Obituary for Josie Abernethy (Roten) Josie Abernethy passed away peacefully on June 20, 2018 at 6:25 AM. Josie was born on January 19, 1918 on a snowy winter morning in Glendale Springs, NC. She grew up in the North Carolina mountains and loved them her whole life.

She graduated from Glade Valley High School and moved to Greensboro as an adult. There she met Henry Battle Abernethy and they were married on January 6, 1952. They lived all their married years in Durham, NC and raised two children, Gary and Donna.

For the last 7 years Josie had lived in Hickory to be closer to her children. She was healthy and lived on her own until recently. Josie celebrated her 100th birthday in January surrounded by many family and friends.

Josie was an amazing, strong woman of great character and will be missed by many. She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Battle Abernethy and her sister, Johnsie Estes. She is survived by a son, Gary Abernethy and his wife, Scott, a daughter, Donna Fleming and her husband, Howard.

Josie had three granddaughters Katherine, Christine and Meredith and other family, all of whom she loved dearly. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 2:30 PM at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 82 Kimberly Drive, Durham, NC. Receiving will be at the church from 1 to 2 PM prior to the service.

Graveside committal will be at Maplewood Cemetery following the service. Hall-Wynn Funeral Services are handling the arrangements for the family.
