Obituary for Joyce Huseman Joyce Huseman, 86, formerly of Fort Dodge, died July 4, 2018 at the Stratford Specialty Care Center. A service honoring Joyce’s life will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Friday, July 6 at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Joyce Colleen Bailey was born June 23, 1932 in Maryville, MO to Floyd and Clara (Schenkel) Bailey. She has a sister Shirley McMillen.
Joyce started school young so she could be in the same class as her sister Shirley who was a year older. She graduated from Maryville High School in 1949. She attended Northwest Missouri State and earned a Bachelor’s degree with a double major in business and secondary education in 1953.
Joyce was Maryville High School’s Homecoming queen, Northwest Missouri State Homecoming queen, and the Kansas City American Royal Queen. Joyce taught elementary school in Clarinda in 1953 then moved to Emmetsburg in 1955. While there she met and married Vernon “Dutch” Huseman on August 1, 1956.
They moved to Fort Dodge in 1958 where she taught PE in the Fort Dodge Public School District. She loved children and enjoyed teaching at many elementary schools before retiring in 1994. The Fort Dodge PE elementary program was ranked at the top in Iowa and received the highest PE award.
Joyce was a member of the team that accepted the Governors Outstanding PE Teachers Award. Joyce volunteered at Grace Lutheran Church where she was also an active member for years. She was a past member of the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, and she also participated in the Retired Teachers Association.
She was always very active in the community and loved golf, tennis and playing bridge. Joyce is survived by her children, Jodi (Jim) Murphy, Danville, CA; Dr. Terry (Donna) Huseman, Clive, IA; Jana (Tim) Brainerd, Parker, CO; and Dr. Bill (Carol) Huseman, Ankeny, IA; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Janelle, and Jill Murphy; Allison and Jacob Huseman; Alex Brainerd and Ashley (Adam) Seller; Andrew and Maggie Huseman; one great granddaughter Samantha Seller; her sister Shirley McMillen of Maryville, MO; and her sister-in-law Faye (Ron) Peterson, Alta. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Vernon “Dutch” Huseman in 2016 and her parents Floyd and Clara Bailey.
Joyce was a hard worker with a positive attitude and boundless energy. She was caring, kind, and beautiful. Family was the most important thing to Joyce.
She was very loving and protective. Dutch was the love of her life. Their good-natured banter was a joy to watch.
Their family was very blessed to have them as parents. She will be dearly missed by all. Memorials may be directed to the family which will be distributed to support Fort Dodge Schools.
