As part of a military family, she lived in many different places including Cape May, NJ, League City and Corpus Christi, Texas. She graduated from Flour Bluff High School, University of Texas with a BS in education, as well as earning an MS in Information Science.

Karen served our country in the US Army Reserves for 8 years, taught in 5 school districts (including Hallettsville ISD) over the course of 20 years, and was a school librarian in an additional 3 school districts. She spent lots of time building exactly the kind of life she wanted: one filled with family, friends, adventure, travel, quiet down time, and an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. After enjoying excellent health for the entirety of her life, Karen was diagnosed with Stage 4 Signet Ring Cell appendix cancer on March 5, 2018.

Although she was a good sport and endured 10 rounds of chemo and countless scans, tests, and consults, it was determined that there was nothing more that could be done to treat her incredibly rare, highly aggressive form of cancer. In typical Karen-fashion, she got her affairs in order, and continued to live the best life she could. She and Kevin took a long trip through Europe and North Africa.

Shortly after returning home, her health declined quickly. She died in Austin, Texas. Karen is survived by her husband of 23 years, Kevin Myers; sons, Raetsch and Emory Myers; bonus daughters, Erika Myers and Kristen Valdivia, both of Houston, TX; parents Mike and Genny Kistner of Bella Vista, AR; parents-in-law, Pat and David Myers of Hallettsville; grandsons Cameron, Aaron, and Aidan; sisters Bree Burnett of Staunton, VA and Kara Cooper of Bentonville, AR; sister-in-law Julie Myers and her family of Castroville, TX; brother-in-law Mark Myers and his family of Hallettsville, TX; 9 nieces and nephews.

Memorial service: 10 AM, February 2, 2019, at Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville. Please plan to celebrate her life by sharing your favorite Karen story. As per her specific wish, wear whatever makes you happy: shorts and flip flops, yoga pants and sneakers, fancy dress, 3 piece suit with tie.

The only required item is deodorant because y’all know how much she hated smelly pits! Interment will to take place at a private family ceremony.
