Larry Dean Shoun July 16, 1949 – January 18, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences Larry Dean Shoun, 69, Butler, departed from this earth to go to his forever home Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was born July 16, 1949 in Mountain City, and resided in his beloved community of Butler, Tn his entire life. Larry was a graduate of Hampton High School in 1967 where he had a successful football career that earned him a scholarship at Less-McRae College in Banner Elk.

His football career continued there for a freshman year. He then attended the National Hardwood Lumber Association Certified Lumber Grader Program. He was a rock, both physically and spiritually.

He never faltered in his beliefs or his work ethic. He strived every day to make everything and everyone he touched better than he found it. He always wanted what was best and never failed to do what was right.

He was a lover of fellowship with all people and animals, he loved football, good food, giving lectures and traveling with his wife and dear friends Eddie and Pat Clawson. He was the 3rd generation owner and operator of Shoun Lumber which was his life’s passion outside of his family. He loved to work at the mill and everything it entailed.

Some of his favorite hobbies included hauling and delivering firewood and mulch to customers and delivering hams at Christmas time to friends, neighbors and customers. He would often disappear for hours “playing” on his loader moving his dirt and mulch. He was a member of the Butler Ruritan Club where he had served as President.

Larry loved his communities of Johnson & Carter County; he supported local schools in their sports program and supported several organizations. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father George C. Shoun who died August 22, 2008.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years: Deana Grindstaff Shoun. His Children: John Burleson & wife Amanda, Butler, Jill Shoun Hughes & husband Bryan, Johnson City, Katie Shoun Harrell & husband John, Butler and Kelly Shoun, Butler. Five Grandchildren: Conor Burleson, Carson Burleson, Chamis Harrell, Landry Hughes and Laynee Hughes.

His Mother: Irene Laws Shoun, Butler. His Sister: Linda Shoun Grindstaff & husband Benny, Mountain City. Several nieces & nephews.

His adopted family Rico & Hortencia Buenfil, His brother-in-law: Jerry Grindstaff. Bill Shoun, who was like a brother to him. His dogs: Booger & Chewy.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of Larry Dean Shoun will be conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Kennedy and Rev. Terry Richardson officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2019 in Butler Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Wood and Rev. Gary Roe officiating.

Music will be provided by Christy Malone. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday will be: John Harrell, Bryan Hughes, John Burleson, Tony Deloach, Tom Kyte, Tim Laws, Rico Buenfil, Bill Shoun, Jason Clawson and Eddie Clawson. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of Larry to the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 22072, Knoxville, Tenn.
