Leola Carpenter was born on July 23, 1929 in Chicago, IL to the late Eddie and Pinkie (Ross) Nelms. Leola was a long time resident of South Bend and served many years as a nurse at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. She was a very loving wife and mother, cherished by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Leola is survived by six of her children: Theresa Tyler of South Bend, Larry (Patty) Wright of South Bend, Patricia (Lorenzo) Blanton of South Bend, Andre Banks of South Bend, Joseph Banks of South Bend and Anthony Banks of South Bend; 40 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 74 great-great grandchildren; special friends Johnnie Reeves and Willa Hardins; special niece Amanda Nelms. Leola was preceded in death by three of her children: Sherrie Ann Wright, James Kevin Wright and Richard Lee Banks; her siblings: Mary Francis, Marie Tony, Amanda Perry, Anna Burgess, Marcelus Nelms and Lamar Nelms and her parents. Services for Leola Carpenter will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend.

Friends may call on the family for one hour prior to service at the church. Pastor André A. McGhee will officiate the funeral service. Burial at Highland Cemetery will follow.
