Obituary for Louis J. Bal Louis Joseph Bal, 95, of Norway, passed away at ManorCare Wednesday, October 10, 2018 surrounded by his family. Louie was born on January 16, 1923 to the late Stanislaw and Katherine (Sanicki) Bal. The 8th of 11 children, he was born and raised on the family farm.

He worked hard all of his life. He was a 1941 graduate of Norway High School, the only member of his family to graduate. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the WWII era.

On October 5, 1957 Louie married Nancy Lagina at St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. He worked at the Niagara Mill for 38 years, retiring in 1988. Louie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Norway and the American Legion.

In his spare time, Louie loved working outdoors, cutting wood, planting flowers and spending time in his vegetable garden growing hundreds of tomato plants. His first love was farming, often telling stories about growing up on the family farm. He was also an avid Detroit Lions fan.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nancy; six children: Steve Bal of San Diego, CA, Teresa (Michael) Swanson of Kingsford, Denise (Steve) Feira of Iron Mountain, Colleen (Pete) Betker of Crozet, Virginia, Maureen Bal of Green Bay, and Joe (Terri) Bal of Norway. He also leaves his grandchildren; Matthew Swanson, Cassie and Tony Feira, Hailee and Samantha Betker, Josh, Blake, and Ciara Vieau, and Stevie Schultz; a sister-in-law, Ann Bal; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters; Anna, Elizabeth, Mary and Victoria; his brothers; Michael, Henry, William, Albert, Edward and Joe; brother-in-law, Joseph Lagina and sister-in-law, Mary Jane Conard.

A private family mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway. Fr. Timothy Ekaitis will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
