Obituary for Margaret “Mary” Hopper Margaret “Mary” Hopper passed away on January 9, 2019 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center after a short illness. Born on August 8, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey she was the daughter of James J. and Lillian (McGrath) Hopper. Mary was a graduate of Bellevue School of Nursing.
She received her master’s degree from Columbia University School of Nursing. She was employed at Bellevue Hospital and at research projects at Cornell Hospital. She was a parishioner at the Church of St. Joachim – St. John the Evangelist in Beacon, New York.
Mary was a reliable and steadfast caregiver for her parents in the later years of life. She was an avid reader and loved sharing her latest book with you. Mary was also an energetic and vibrant woman who loved to be kept busy doing gardening, exercising, traveling or having a good conversation.
She is survived by two brothers, James Hopper of the Villages in Florida, and John Hopper (Kathy) of Fishkill, New York and three sisters, Elizabeth Hopper of Beacon, New York, Patricia Burke (David) of Beacon, New York and Anne Champlin (Ray) of Nelsonville, New York. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Barbara Hopper of Beacon, New York. Mary was predeceased by her parents, her brother Thomas Hopper in 2014 and sister-in-law Claudia Hopper in 2018.
She is also survived by nine nieces and nephews, Tom Hopper, Melissa Haplea, Priscilla Barker, Mark Hopper, Erin VanBuren, Jennifer Zamudio, David Burke, John Hopper and Jon Champlin; her eighteen great nieces and nephews, and two great great nieces. In her honor, memorial donations may be made to the Church of St. Joachim – St. John the Evangelist, 2 0ak Street, Beacon, New York 12508. Family and friends will gather for calling hours on Monday, January 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Riverview Funeral Home by Halvey, 2 Beekman Street, Beacon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, January 15 at 10am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 Willow Street, Beacon. Burial will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, Beacon. Immediately following the burial, family and friends are invited to a celebration of life at the Southern Dutchess County Club, 1209 North Avenue in Beacon.
