Obituary for Mary Lou Baublit Mary Lou Baublit unexpectedly died at her home at Ann Arbor’s Brookhaven Manor Senior Living Community on Saturday, September 15, 2018. She was born in Peru, Indiana on January 20, 1927. She was the daughter of Claude and Lucille (Harding) Clark of Peru, Indiana.

Mary Lou graduated from Peru High School, class of 1945. While in middle school she worked for her grandfather Elmer Harding in his neighborhood grocery store as a cashier. During her freshman and sophomore high school years she worked after school and summers in a plant that manufactured parts for the B-24 Liberator Bombers used During WWII.

Mary Lou ground the glass bombsites by hand after school and then during summer vacations she inspected the wiring harnesses that were installed in the B-24 planes. Mary Lou remarked that every component part slated for the B-24 had to be absolutely perfect. During her junior year and part of her senior year in high school she worked part-time at Singer’s Dry Goods Department Store.

During this time she met a man who was to become her future husband Cecil D. Baublit, Jr. in the marching band they where both were French horn players. Cecil was the lead French horn player and a perfectionist, which at first irritated Mary Lou and caused her to ignore him. After the war ended Mary Lou obtained a job as a registration and drawings clerk for the Butterfield Roxy Theater in Peru, Indiana.

After graduation she was hired by the Glasier Furniture Store as a full time cashier and bookkeeper. She remained in her furniture store position until she married Cecil Baublit in Niles, Michigan. While living in Niles she became an accounts payable and billing clerk for Simplicity Pattern Company while her husband was in management training for Montgomery Ward & Company.

When her husband was transferred to Hammond, Indiana, Mary Lou followed and began employment with Illinois Bell Telephone Company where she continued to work until the starting of her family when she became a full time homemaker. After living in Hammond, the couple’s careers led them to Champaign, Illinois, Logansport, Indiana, Kokomo, Indiana, and Danville, Illinois. During this period of raising a family there was time to enjoy the outdoors on numerous trailer camping trips.

She was a dedicated volunteer for the Red Cross, Salvation Army, church wedding coordinator, president of the Women’s Fellowship and Beta Sigma Phi serving 3 years as a state officer and parliamentarian. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over 52 years and holds the highest Beta Sigma Phi degree as PSI Master. During the mid 1960’s Cecil’s career moved them to Ann Arbor, Michigan where they built a home in Georgetown Subdivision.

Soon after the move to Ann Arbor when the children were older, Mary Lou resumed her employment with AT&T from where she eventually retired. Ann Arbor is considered the family home now because this is the location where the family has lived the longest. At the start of the couple’s retirement years they embarked on a 20-year span of exploring Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, Caribbean Islands, South Pacific Islands, all while managing to sandwich 29 ocean cruises in between trips abroad.

After Cecil departed this world, Mary Lou moved to Brookhaven Manor Senior Living Community where she met and enjoyed many special and caring friends. Her devotion and love for her family will long be remembered in the hearts and minds of her survivors. Her children John (Judy) Baublit of Saline, Michigan, Deborah (James) Jacobs of Bloomington, Indiana, Pamela (William) Rescorla of Howell, Michigan, and Thomas (Tammy) of Seattle, Washington.

Also surviving Mary Lou are eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary Lou’s honor to the American Heart Association (7272 Greenville Ave. , Dallas, TX 75231).
