Obituary for Mary Sandra Sopcak Mary Sandra Sopcak, age 85, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at St. Francis Home of Thomas Township. The youngest of five children, Sandra was born on March 6, 1933, to Frank and Edith Cardinal in Carrollton, Michigan. While attending St. Joseph High School, she met the love of her life, John Sopcak.
They dated and were married in 1953. Together they shared 43 wonderful years. Sandra loved her family more than anything, so much that she would even play football with her sons, shining as the star quarterback who could throw a spiral ball that rivaled the pros.
Once the kids were in school, she went to work at St. Luke’s Hospital (now Covenant) and, according to Sandra, is now much larger. She worked in housekeeping for a total of 14 years: 8 years on days and 6 years on nights. Sandra sang in the choir at St. John the Baptist Church, then St. Andrew Catholic Church, and she also sang for weddings and various events.
She loved to sing and, lucky for everyone who heard, she had the most beautiful soprano voice. When she moved to St. Francis Home, it truly became her home, where she adored the people around her and all the activities. Sandra always said that the only hobby that she ever wanted or needed was her family that she loved so dearly.
Her incredibly kind and giving heart will always be remembered and treasured. Sandra is survived by her loving children, John Sopcak, David (Carol) Sopcak, Paul (Marcia) Sopcak, Steven Sopcak, Juliana Sopcak, Matthew (Sarah) Sopcak, and Mary (Rob) Schmidt; grandchildren, Jessica, Sarah, Ashley, Michael, Craig, Rhianna, Shannon, Mark Daniel, Cloe, Ciara, Braden, Ian, Keaton, and Colton; 16 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; brother, Fred (Carolyn) Cardinal; daughter in law, Yvonne Sopcak. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, John Sopcak; son, Mark Sopcak; granddaughter, Heidi Sopcak, her parents; and brothers, Jamie “Jack”, Allen “Bud”, and William “Bill” Cardinal.
