Maureen A. Sherman, 70 of Magnolia, wife of George W. Sherman passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. She was born in Worcester, MA on November 3, 1948 daughter of the late John “Jack” and Maureen (Dillon) McCarthy. Maureen was a graduate of St. Peter Marian High School and Worcester City Hospital receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
She and George left Worcester and moved to Gloucester in 1970. She worked as a nurse in the maternity wing of Addison Gilbert Hospital for over 20 years. She gladly cared for those around her.
Maureen marveled at the beauty of Gloucester and one of her greatest joys was sharing her home with summer time visitors. She never missed a chance to drive down Shore Road in Magnolia and remark how very fortunate we are to live in this beautiful place. Maureen enjoyed boating, and spending long days on Magnolia Beach.
She taught her children to appreciate family, friendship and laughter. Her loud, infectious laugh will be missed by all who loved her. She loved to travel especially her International trips with her husband and friends.
She was an inquisitive, active woman and it was once said that she would gladly attend “the opening of an envelope”. She was an avid reader and relished being a part of the Magnolia book club. She was always on top of current events in the newspaper and read two newspapers cover to cover every day.
She enjoyed a long conversation or engaging in a spirited debate. She believed that rules were made to be broken and that walking in the rain makes you beautiful. She was a very strong woman who faced challenge with grace.
She was a wonderful and fun grandmother who just adored her 2 grandsons, Sammy and Jack. She loved to watch them play hockey and baseball and took every chance she could to cheer them on. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, George W. Sherman of Magnolia; daughters, Hannah Fonti and her husband Dean of Gloucester, Molly Parisi and her husband Salvatore of Magnolia; son, Corey Sherman of Magnolia; grandsons, Sammy Parisi and Jack Fonti; sisters, Sharon Giza, Sheila Hannen both of Worcester, Margaret Litchfield of Magnolia; brothers, Michael McCarthy of Savannah, GA, Paul McCarthy of Worcester and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her Celebration of Life Mass will be held on February 16th at 11:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Manchester. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There will be no visiting hours and the burial will be held privately.
