Maxine Claus Squires died on September 8, 2018 at the age of 96 less than 5 weeks shy of her 97th birthday. Born on October 12, 1921 (a year after women gained the right to vote) in Denver, Colorado to Lena and Arthur Claus she left the mountains to marry Hugh Squires and settle in what was then the farm country of Oregon, Ohio. They raised 4 children who all became college graduates, one (Mark) obtaining an advanced degree and one (Linda) earning a doctor of chiropractic medicine.

Besides… Read More » taking care of a country home and being the taxi service hauling 4 children to music (she played piano and brought it with her to Ohio) and art lessons in downtown Toledo, Maxine began taking swimming lessons at the Jefferson St. YWCA to keep her sanity. She began as a novice and ended as a swimming instructor to others. She also became a bus driver for the Oregon city schools at a time when only a few women were doing so, keeping her driving ability into her 90’s.

Maxine was an adept bowler and after her husband’s retirement, they took up dancing and spent many weekend nights enjoying their new skill. They also traveled, often with their friends Al and George Millhouse, including taking their children to the New York World Fair both in 1964-5 where they camped in Parsippany, NJ and trekked over 40 miles daily to the Flushing Meadows site. The children’s memories include seeing the bumper-to-bumper traffic extending past their campsite as New Yorkers returned to the city on Sunday night.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Hugh and her brother Willis Claus. She is survived by her children: Art (Barb), Debbie, Linda (Colleen), Mark (Nancy), and 4 grandchildren. Per Maxine’s wishes there will be no viewing or funeral but a future memorial service will be held to celebrate her life.

The family would like to thank the entire Otterbein Pemberville staff where Maxine happily spent her retirement years from 1999 until her passing. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Otterbein Pemberville non-profit community.
