Obituary for R. John “Jack” McBain Watervliet – R. John “Jack” McBain, 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 10, 2018 after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born on October 2, 1936, the son of the late Edward and Mary Ann Johnson McBain. He was a lifelong resident of Watervliet and attended Watervliet High School.
He was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (formerly St. Patrick’s Church) in Watervliet. Jack married the love of his life, Maureen (Burke) McBain on September 27, 1960 and they recently celebrated 57 years together. They traveled extensively throughout the United States in their motor home visiting Yellowstone National Park, Tennessee, Nashville, New Orleans and Washington, just to name a few.
They also enjoyed spending their winters in Florida in the years following their retirement in 1994. Jack was a talented carpenter who owned and operated McBain Contracting for many years where, his wife, Maureen was by his side as his partner in the business. Together Jack and Maureen raised five children: John E. “Jackie” who died tragically at the age of 19 in 1981; Sheila (Eileen) McBain; Edward (Tracie) McBain; Sandra (Brian) Pembrook; Kenneth (Jennifer) McBain.
He was the beloved “Pop” to 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and brother of Donald McBain. He is also survived by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. In addition to his son Jackie, Jack was predeceased by his brother Edward Jr., and grandson Edward T. McBain.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10 am in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church, 25th Street and 7th Avenue in Watervliet where the Reverend John F. Tallman will celebrate Jack’s funeral Mass. The rite of committal and interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Family and friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Jack’s family on Tuesday from 4 until 7 pm.
