Raymond’s Obituary Raymond Eskelson, 94, Minot, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. Raymond Henry Eskelson was born on November 3, 1924 in Minot, ND. He was the youngest child born to Henry C. and Pauline (Lee) Eskelson.

Raymond grew up on the family farm northwest of Butte, ND, and attended a country school in the area. When Raymond was 16 years old, his father passed away. Raymond then quit school to help his brother, Marvin, with the daily operation of the family farm.

In 1951, Marvin passed away and Raymond took over the farming operations by himself. In 1952, Raymond married Marjorie Ward. From this union, four children were born Earl, Cheryl, Dwight and Brenda.

In 1971, Raymond married Evelyn Vaagen. This marriage brought five step-children into the family, Shirley, Judy, Jerry, Randy and Debbie. Raymond continued to farm until the mid 70’s when he moved to Minot, where he purchased and operated the Empire Motel.

Raymond and Evelyn ran the Empire Motel until 2001, while also purchasing and operating the Kenway Motel in 1989. In his later years, Raymond owned and operated R & E Storage until selling the business in 2017. Ray loved breeding and raising his horses.

He enjoyed taking drives in the country, and dancing to waltz’s and polkas. Surviving family includes: his children, Earl (Gloria) Eskelson, Minot, Cheryl Eskelson, Bismarck, Dwight Eskelson, Drake, and Brenda (Bruce) Degenstein, Voltaire; step-children, Shirley (Gene) Richardson, Brandon, SD, Judy (John) Solem, Garrison, Jerry (Darla) Vaagen, Coleharbor, Randy (Rhonda) Vaagen, Bismarck, and Debbie (Steve) Senechal, Burlington; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and his special friend, Vivian Helmers. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Chester, Marvin, Rueben and Ralph; sisters, Alyce and Dorathy; and his wives, Marjorie and Evelyn.

Funeral: Friday, February 22, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND, at a later date in the spring of 2019. Visitation: Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
