Richard “Dick” Ackerson, Sr., 82, entered into eternal peace on Monday, May 14, 2018, at Atlantic Care Medical Center, Pomona, NJ. Dick was born on May 23, 1935, the 5th of six children of the late Charles and Ruth Ackerson. He attended Ramsey High School and joined the United States Army in 1955.

He spent some of his service time in Germany, a place he always longed to return. After the service, he returned to Ramsey and joined the Ramsey Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Chief from 1970-1971. He recently was honored for receiving his 60-year service stripes from the department at a dinner in March.

He married “his girl” Maureen V Williams in 1961, and they had 3 children. Dick also served as on the Parish Council at St Paul RC Church in Ramsey. In 1983, the family relocated to Manahawkin.

He worked for the Ocean County Road Department before retiring in 2012. Dick served as the President of Amergael Irish American Club, a member of the American Legion Post #493, a member of St Francis of Assisi Church in Brant Beach, and delivered Meals on Wheels and worked the Festival of the Sea for St Francis as a volunteer. He was a very kind and gentle soul; loved having a good time and was always up for a good laugh.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his brothers, Herb and Charles Ackerson Jr., and sisters, Betty Ladrick, Eleanor Babcock and Ruthann Kelly. He leaves his cherished memories to be carried on by his loving wife of 56 years, Maureen, his children; Richard J Ackerson Jr and wife Jaclyn of Manahawkin, William C Ackerson and wife Victoria of Mahwah, NJ, and daughter Laura Ackerson-Ott and husband Raymond Ott of Manahawkin, his six grandchildren, Charlie, Mia and Samantha Ackerson, and Briana, Jenna and Ryan Ott, along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 11AM-1PM at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Avenue, Ramsey, NJ 07446.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s name to the Ramsey Fire Department, 25 South Island Avenue, Ramsey, NJ 07446. Please sign the online guestbook and share your memories of Richard on this memorial.
