Robert E. McCann, age 84, of Milton, died on Friday, June 22, 2018, at AgraceCenter for Hospice & Palliative Care. He was born in Janesville on January 20, 1934, the son of Hugh and Agnes (Monaghan) McCann. Robert married Marilyn Gilbert on June 2, 1956, at Nativity of Saint Mary Catholic Church.

They had just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Bob served with pride in the Army in Korea from 1954-1956. After returning home, he and Marilyn married.

Bob worked at General Motors in Janesville until his retirement in 1989. He was a hard-working and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who demonstrated unsurpassed loyalty to his family. Bob was fiercely proud of his family and of his Irish heritage.

He was a founding member of Blackhawk Credit Union in 1965. He served for 31 years, on the Board, as Director, and as a regional and national credit union delegate lobbying the State of Wisconsin Legislature and the US Congress on behalf of credit union members everywhere. Blackhawk Credit Union provided financial services to the hard-working employees of General Motors at a time when other institutions did not.

Bob was a quietly courageous crusader for the underdog and a champion for all who were voiceless and could not speak for themselves. He was a compassionate, unassuming unsung hero. Robert is survived by three children: Linda (Kurt) Miller of Milton, WI, Daniel McCann of Bluffton, IN, and Laurie (Bryan) Cox of Temecula, CA; as well as five grandchildren: Timothy (Jennifer) Miller of Lowell, MA, Emily (David) Schultz of Deerfield, WI, Brandon Cox of Las Vegas, NV, Austin Cox of Portland, OR, and Connor Cox of Temecula, CA.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn, who passed just two weeks ago on June 8, 2018; brothers, Jerry, Tom and Richard; sister, Phyllis and other relatives. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00pm Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, 313 E. Wall Street, Janesville. A visitation will be held 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME.

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is that quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow”.
