Shawna Cobabe Van Meeteren August 16, 1948 – January 27, 2019 There were big hugs in heaven this week as our beloved Shawna Cobabe Van Meeteren reunited with her son, Kash, and other family members gave her a joyous welcome. Shawna Cobabe Van Meeteren was born in Ogden to Alvin Fred Cobabe and June Heslop Cobabe on August 16, 1948. She was one of four girls, Carolyn Cobabe Lowther (Val), Gayla Cobabe Folkman (Wayne), and Aleta Cobabe (Marc Paulsen).

She enjoyed an idyllic childhood in a loving home filled with home cooking, family vacations, and beautiful dresses sewn by her talented mother who taught her the tried and true skills of a Daughter of the Utah Pioneers. Shawna lived in Slaterville, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Eden. She attended school in Plain City, Salt Lake City and graduated from Ogden High in 1966.

After high school, she attended Utah State University in Logan. She was introduced to the one true love of her life, Henry Clair Van Meeteren. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

They DID live happily ever after and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their love endured and she will be waiting to continue that bond for all time. Their family bloomed high on a mountain top, where she and her husband raised their two children, Jamie Van Meeteren Lythgoe (Doug) and Adam Kash Van Meeteren (Julia).

They adventurously pioneered making their home in a trailer as they began what would be their ongoing legacy. They actually built a mountain. Shawna and Clair, along with her parents, Alvin and June Cobabe, and other family members were the foundation that created Powder Mountain.

That’s where they grew their Powder Mountain family, employing and shaping the futures of thousands of skiers. They managed the resort for over 30 years. Shawna was known for early morning snow reports, live on KSL radio; as well as the delicious goodies that they served the hungry skiers such as sourdough scones and honey butter from their own honey bees.

Shawna made many long and enduring friendships at Powder Mountain. Eventually, due to health issues, she stopped working as the Food Service manager to enjoy life on the family ranch that she and Clair loved so dearly, raising cattle, ponies, pigs and teenagers. Elkhorn Ranch, the former Eccles Homestead, with its beautiful view and fresh air made Shawna so incredibly happy as well as seeing Clair enjoy the hard work of farming.

She was proud when her son Kash joined Clair as a hardworking rancher and was so devastated at his early passing. She celebrated joining Kash on the other side. Family was everything to her!

Shawna enjoyed her grandkids Carlie, Jaxen, and Jameson Lythgoe and she was so proud of the great people they have become. Shawna also loved her church and was consoled by the knowledge that after death those loving bonds would continue. We will all be watched over by our newest, beautiful guardian angel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carolyn, and son Kash. Please join us to honor her loving memory. Shawna’s viewing will be held Friday, February 1, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 2nd at 11a.m. at the Huntsville Stake Center, 6500 East 1900 North, Eden, with a visitation prior to service from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a graveside service at the Eden Meadow View Cemetery. Loved ones please join us at the Huntsville Stake Center following the graveside dedication.
