Sheila P Cutler March 14, 1955 – April 16, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Our beautiful Sheila Patricia Sullivan Cutler was born in a small coastal California town called Watsonville on March 14, 1955 and died in Butte at St. James Hospital on April 16, 2018 as a result of a car accident. Her parents, Caryl and Fran Sullivan, moved from Butte to Watsonville in 1951, and after Fran’s unexpected passing in 1965, Caryl moved her four children back to Butte. Sheila attended St. Ann’s grade school and graduated from Butte Central in 1973.
Even though she became a full-fledged Buttonian, she loved that little town in coastal California and visited there frequently. She graduated from the University of Montana in 1977 with a degree in Elementary Education. Sheila always knew she wanted to be a teacher—she would play “school” as a little girl—she always seemed to know what she wanted to do with her life: teach, be a good wife, and a loving mother and she did exactly those things.
She met the love of her life Paul Cutler at a party—although they were with different dates, they managed to connect that evening and were married on August 5, 1978 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church—they would have been married 40 years this August. Sheila and Paul were natural-born teachers. Sheila taught for the Butte School District for 33 1/3 years.
She loved teaching the little ones and most of her teaching career was teaching Kindergarteners and 1st graders. She touched the lives of hundreds of Butte children, if she didn’t then Paul did. She absolutely loved children—especially her own: Katie, Corey, Marc and her step-daughter Stacey.
Her family loved to joke about her “F” words that were the good ones—her favorite being FUN but we would like to add: Faith, Family, Friends, Flying, Fabulous and Funerals. She was “one in a million” and just about everyone in Butte knew her and loved her sweetness and kindness. She loved the color red, sandals and capris, matching outfits, St. Patrick’s Day, crocheting baby blankets, traveling the world with Paul and Marc, French dips and her food could never touch on the plate.
Sheila especially loved her Catholic faith which was demonstrated through serving the Church by being a Eucharistic minister and assisting Father Haffey with Butte funerals. She was preceded in death by her father Fran Sullivan, her grandparents Katherine and Tim Duggan, in-laws Al and Lorraine Cutler, brother-in-laws Dale and Pat, her Uncle Fr. Bud Sullivan, and many dear aunts and uncles.
Sheila is survived by her loving husband Paul; her mother Caryl Sullivan; her children Katie (Keith), Corey, Marc, Stacey (Jason); her grandchildren Alex (Seth), Zach, Cooper, Jayci, Cutler, and Croix; siblings Kate (Ted), Tom, and Colleen (Wilbur); and many close nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation at St Ann’s Catholic Church on Thursday, April 19th from 5:00p. m to 7:00p.
m, with a vigil service following at 7:00p.m. The funeral will be held on Friday, April 20th at 11:00a.m., with a reception to follow at the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Butte High School Foundation and/or the Butte Central Foundation.
