Shirley Ann Wharton, 86, of Westminster, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2018 at her home. Born July 30, 1932 in Sewards, MD, she was the daughter of the late Hobson S. and Addie Smith Horseman. Shirley grew up on Elliott’s Island where she attended Elliott Elementary School and Vienna High School.

In her early days she picked crabs that her father, a waterman, caught and sold. She also held jobs at Kresge’s, C & P Telephone Company and Murphy’s. Shirley met and married the love… Read More » of her life, Edward Samuel Wharton, who served in the US Navy, on June 22, 1952, after dating for a year and a half.

They moved to Beltsville, MD, in 1955 where they raised two sons together. Ed passed away suddenly in 1994. Shirley moved to Westminster, MD in 1996 where she lived with her son Allen Kenneth Wharton and his wife Rhonda Jean Wharton.

She enjoyed country music, reading, doing puzzles and taking bus trips with various senior centers. In addition to her husband, Shirley is predeceased by her son, Stanley Edward Wharton. She leaves behind her son Allen Wharton and his wife Rhonda, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Services and interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel. Online condolences may be offered at www.
