Statia B. (Smus) Staszko, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 14, 2019. Born June 6, 1927, daughter of the late John and Tekla (Gancarz) Smus, she was raised in Springfield and was a graduate of the High School of Commerce. Statia was employed in the offices of Hampden Grinding Wheel and Duckworth Employees Federal Credit Union, and retired from the Agawam Federal Credit Union.

Statia was a communicant of the former Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Springfield, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, and for many years as a member of its parish council. She was a proud member of the Polish Womens’ Alliance, Group 422, and served as a past council president. Statia was an avid candlepin bowler, knitter and crocheter, loved to travel, and enjoyed going for long walks.

Statia’s family wishes to thank all the wonderful nurses, caregivers and staff at Heritage Hall East and Baystate Hospice, who’ve gone above and beyond in their kindness and care. Statia was predeceased in 1984 by her beloved husband of thirty-six years, Ferdinand A. Staszko, and also predeceased by her son-in-law, Stefan Casemyr. She is survived by her loving children, Cynthia Casemyr of Miami, FL, and John Staszko and wife Judy of Springfield; cherished grandchildren, Tess Gillard and husband Phil, Joakim Casemyr and wife Katarina, Catherine Steinheber and husband Eric, Natalie Chilaka and husband Karthick, Dominika Staszko and Daniel Staszko; great-grandchildren, Remy and Gabrielle Steinheber, Annika Chilaka and Robin Persson; brother, Richard Smus and wife Lois of Feeding Hills, sisters, Mary Smus and Agnes Bogacz, both of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Anna Stanley, Angie Smus, Wanda Smus, Evelyn Kaczynski and Wanda Adamski, and brothers, Joe, Ray, Fr. John and Stanley Smus. Statia’s funeral will be held Monday from Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. Stanislaus Basilica.

Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 9-9:45AM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bay State Hospice, 50 Maple St., Springfield, MA 01102 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 264 Cottage St., Springfield, MA 01104.
