Obituary for Terry Rice Theron “Terry” J. Rice, Sr., surrounded by his family, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 15th, at NHC Place at Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 96 years old. Mr. Rice was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret Betty Garren Rice, and his parents, Theron J. Rice and Mary Ethel Showalter Rice.

He was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1922. He is survived by his son, Theron J. Rice, Jr. (Sandra) of Pleasant View, TN, granddaughter Amy Rice Whitworth (Mark) of Pleasant View, TN, grandson Theron J. Rice, III (Deanna) of Hendersonville, TN, and seven great grandchildren, Andrew and Abigail Whitworth, and Alaina, Ella, Emily, Amelia and Samuel Rice. Before moving to Franklin in May 2004, and joining St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mr. and Mrs. Rice were active members at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia for forty-seven years.

Before enlisting in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1943, Mr. Rice attended George Washington University in Washington, D. C. He was a Marine Combat Correspondent whose job was to write the story of World War II as experienced by, and seen through, the eyes of individual Marines. During two years in the South and Central Pacific with Marine fighter and dive-bomber squadrons, he filed more than 600 stories, which were published in newspapers throughout the United States. After the war, Mr. Rice spent seven years with the Army and Navy Bulletin, a weekly military service journal.

He then joined the legislative staff of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, and in 1962 became the Chamber’s Chief Lobbyist. In 1965, he was named General Manager of Continental Oil Company’s Washington Office. He spent seventeen years in that position and four more after Conoco became a wholly owned subsidiary of DuPont.

He retired from DuPont in 1986. Mr. Rice was proud to be known as the first resident to move into the new NHC Place at Cool Spring’s Assisted Living facility. During his residency there, he penned “Getting to Know You,” a column in the NHC Newsletter devoted to profiling the residents.

A two-hour visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 27th at Austin and Bell Funeral Home, 6316 Highway 41A, Pleasant View, Tennessee followed by a 1:00 p.m. graveside service at Ever Rest Cemetery in Pleasant View, Tennessee.
