Obituary for Tex R. Harvey Tex R. Harvey, 80, of Grand Island, surrounded by his family, went to be with the Lord on September 28, 2018. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Monday, October 1st at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Services will be at 2 pm Tuesday, October 2nd at Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island.

Private burial of ashes will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Tex was born to Rufus and Elaine (Hohnbaum) Harvey on December 21, 1937, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from Utica High School in 1955 and Nebraska Wesleyan College in 1959.

In 1960, Tex married Bev Rolfsmeier from Seward, Nebraska. In this union were born three sons: Jeff and twins, Troy and Linc. Following college graduation, Tex accepted a teaching/coaching/custodian/bus driver position at McCool Junction for one year.

He then taught, coached basketball, and assisted in football at York for seven years. In 1967, Tex and his family moved to Grand Island where he accepted the position as head basketball coach, where he taught, assisted in football and later, refereed in the State Basketball Tournament. He taught in GI for 31 years, the last ten years serving as Athletic/Activities Director.

Tex retired in 1998. Upon, retirement, Tex was often heard saying, “I plan to fish until the water freezes and hunt until it thaws”. He pretty much did just that until the last few years.

Among the activities Tex enjoyed were spending time with family, attending Paul Nauman’s Tuesday Evening Bible Study, refereeing, hunting, reading, playing cards, and his yearly fishing trip to Canada. Tex never met a stranger. He knew just what to say to make a person feel valued.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Rolfsmeier Harvey (Bev), of 58 years; son Jeff, daughter in law, Katie of San Antonio; son Troy of Kearney; sister Pam Eikenhorst, brother in law Steve of Osceola; sister-in-laws Janice Rolfsmeier and Betty (Jack) Aegerter, and step-mother Ruby Rolfsmeier of Seward, and grandchildren Jax and Colt Harvey of San Antonio and Lacey and Nicole Harvey of Kearney; many nieces, nephews and friends. Tex was preceded in death by his parents, “Rasty” and Elaine; his father and mother-in-law A.H. “Red” and Alma Rolfsmeier; a son, Linc Anthony Harvey, a niece Cindy Forney, and a brother-in-law, Don Rolfsmeier. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Christian Re Center, Evangelical Free Church or GI Coaches Association.

Before his passing, Tex received notification of his induction in the Grand Island Athletic Hall of Fame to be awarded in February, 2019.
