Obituary for Esther Rose “Sally” Meister Esther Rose “Sally” Meister, 90, of Grand Island passed away at her home on Sunday, September 16, 2018. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the church, with a Rosary at 7:00. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Esther was born April 16, 1928 in rural Greeley County, the daughter of John and Tillie (Furmanski) Smollen.
She grew up in Greeley County attending country school. On August 23, 1952, Esther and William J. Meister were married in O’Conner, NE, in a church which is now on the historical register. Following their marriage, they made Grand Island their home.
Over the years, Esther was employed by Twin Rivers, as a cook for Blessed Sacrament Grade School, and by the Grand Island Veterans Home. She also had her own in-home daycare for a time. Esther volunteered for Blessed Sacrament Thrift Store, retiring when she was 89 years young.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Blessed Sacrament Elder Society. Esther loved gardening, canning her produce, crocheting and volunteering. Those left to cherish Esther’s memory include her brothers and sister-in-law, Al and Maureen Smollen and Frank Smollen, all of Grand Island; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded by her husband, William, who passed in 2011; her parents; sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Frank Kosinski, Elizabeth and Glen Alsup and Edna and Arthur Scarpa; brothers and their wives, John and Marie Smollen and Robert and Marietta Smollen; and sister-in-law, Alice Smollen. Memorials are suggested to Central Catholic High School or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
