Obituary for George Osmond George Osmond, 89, of Grand Island passed away peacefully in his home on August 25, 2018, surrounded by his families’ love and support. Celebration of life will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate.
To honor George’s service to his country, military honors will be rendered following the service by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and United Veterans Honor Guard. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. George was born on June 19, 1929 in Bath, Maine to James and Geneva (Hamlin) Osmond.
He enlisted in the Navy at the end of WWII, completed a tour in Korea, and served in Vietnam. George spent over 20 years in the Navy as a marine diesel mechanic, a profession, he pursued after his honorable discharge. George’s time in the Navy taught him the value of structure and hard work, traits that he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
As a dad, George could be “military strict” but loving and nurturing, leading his children to learn respect and the importance of education. His dual role as mom and dad, coupled with his sense of humor and joy lead him to celebrate all holidays and become an excellent cook. His infamous “banana bread” is a favorite of friends and family.
He took pride in maintaining the beauty of his yard as well as cultivating of neighborhood friendships. George loved being “Gramps”. His house was the center for family gatherings.
Mornings at Gramps always included his famous “waffles” and George made sure to continue the tradition by giving his grandchildren a waffle maker for their own home. He was there for all of the dance recitals, school programs and baseball games. He was proud to watch them graduate from high school and further their education.
Through the years his refrigerator and “pantries” were always filled with snacks, welcoming them at any time of the day! The T.V. was readily accessible for cartoons, mostly Tom and Jerry and Looney Toons! Having lived in California for most of his adult life, George missed watching the seasons change along with the snowy winters in Maine.
He moved to Nebraska in 2000 to fulfill that longing but also to be near his daughters. His legacy is cherished by his children: Dottie (Terrill) Williams of Monument, CO, Priscilla (Dave) Mildenstein of St. Libory, George Osmond Jr. of Temecula, CA, Rod (Wendy) Osmond of Long Beach, CA; grandchildren: Robin (Chris) Drago, Amy Schnug, Ryan (Rachael) Mildenstein, Matt (Celeste) Mildenstein, Courtney (Chad) Griebel, Christina (Casey) Bessey, Michelle (Nick) Williams, Lexy Osmond, Sierra (Nick) Lewis, Stephan (Sierra) Osmond, Amanda Osmond; great-grandchildren: Jaelynn, Drake, Lincoln, Makayla, Gracie, Jack, Alex, Mason, Nolan, Kyle, Henry, Hudson and Norah: sister Beatrice Symonds of CT, nieces and nephews and neighbors that became family. George was preceded death by his brother, Jim Osmond; and all of his beloved pets, Tasha, Cricket, Ginger, Deja, Shelby, Socks, Jamal and Ziggy, the goose!
! ! An inurnment of his ashes at a later date, will be held at Convict Lake in the High Sierra mountains in California, a favorite family vacation place.
