Obituary for Ray Leslie Dockum Ray Leslie Dockum, 84, of Grand Island passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018 in Grand Island. Memorial service and celebration of Ray’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Third City Christian Church. Reverend Nick Schonlau will officiate.

Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army and Grand Island Veterans Honor Guard. A gathering of friends and family will be from 10:00 until service time at the church. He was born March 3, 1934 in Hampton, Iowa, to Leslie and Hazel (Parker) Dockum from Hansell, Iowa.

He married Selma Kathleen Surratt on September 5, 1954. Ray is survived by his wife Selma “Kathy”; son, Paul (Sarah) Dockum; daughter, Lisa Dickey; and his grandchildren, Christopher (Dorie) Dickey, Sean (Emily) Dickey, Ryan, Trevor, Cheyanne, Cody, and Caleb Dockum; his six great grandchildren, Evelyn, Ray, Thomas, Trystan, Adalyn, and Elizabeth Dickey; along with a dear friend that was a part of our family for years and considered a son, Brad Leggett. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Hazel Dockum; his son-in-law, LeRoy Dickey; and his in-laws, Everett and Ressie Surratt.

Ray was so proud of his family/grandkids and great grandkids and loved to spend time with them. He was so overjoyed when he had a great grandchild named after him. Ray was raised in a small town and graduated from Hansell High School in 1952.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Hampton, Iowa, when he was baptized at 12 years old. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He was stationed in Metz, France and was also different parts of Europe for 18 months.

He was a radio communications operator. He also served with the Army reserves until 1961. His father owned a trucking company and he worked for his father for many years.

He spent most of his life driving a truck all over the U.S. for different trucking firms. Ray drove a school bus later on in life for the Grand Island school district. He also volunteered for the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) in Grand Island for four years transporting veterans.

A big Nebraska Husker fan, Ray enjoyed watching them play volleyball, baseball, football, along with Nascar. Private interment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.
