Obituary for Shirley Mae Marten Shirley Mae (Malmberg) Marten, 80, of Grand Island, formerly of Lincoln, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island. A gathering of family and friends will celebrate Shirley’s life from 5-8 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Graveside service and burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Rosehill Cemetery in Pender, NE.

Shirley was born December 23, 1937 in Pender, the daughter of Claus and Frances (McGuire) Malmberg. She graduated from Pender High School in 1955, then moved to Omaha and attended Immanuel Lutheran School of Nursing, working at Clarkson Hospital for several years. She was married to Herman “Fritz” F. Marten on August 13, 1960.

The couple lived in Omaha, North Platte and Halsey for a few years before moving to the family farm in Purdum. During this time, Shirley was a passionate EMT volunteer. In 1989, they left the sandhills and moved to Lincoln, where Shirley was employed as an office manager for a hospice organization.

She was a master flower and vegetable gardener. Also, an extremely talented seamstress, sewing many prom dresses, bridesmaid and wedding dresses, as well as, doing alterations. Shirley loved to craft and created the most beautiful Santa Claus figures, which are treasured by anyone who is blessed to own one.

Christmas was her favorite time of year and every room in the house was decorated. Those who will cherish her memory include her daughter, Inger (Alvin) Sherbeck of Ansley; three granddaughters, Delaney, Gillian and Ashlynn; sisters, Diane (Ron) Raasch of Corydon, IA and Cheryl Wensman of Gilbert, AZ; and brother, Gary (Barb) Malmberg of O’Neill, NE. She is preceded in death by her husband, Fritz, in 2010; son, Timothy; sister, Charolette; and brother, Claus Ardel “Sparky”.
