Obituary for Sally Suzanne Wenzel Sally S. Wenzel, 76, of Grand Island, died October 26, 2018 at CHI-Health St. Francis. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 11 am, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The Reverend Edgar Schambach, Jr., will officiate.

A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, also at the church. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Sally was born on January 13, 1942, in Lititz, PA.

, to William Sr. and Ruth (Carpenter) Hamp. She grew up in Lititz where she attended Warwick Union High school and graduated from Linden Hall Preparatory School for girls in 1960. Linden Hall was founded in 1746, and is the one of the oldest all-girls schools in America.

She had temporary acceptance to Temple University. Sally was raised in a musical family. Her mother played piano, gave lessons, and was an organist at her church.

Sally never played an instrument but had a beautiful singing voice. In earlier years, she was invited to join St. Paul’s choir. She was married to Mark “Tom” Wenzel, Sr. for over 25 years.

Together they had two sons, Mark Jr. and John. In 1966, she settled in Grand Island where she raised her family. Sally was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church from the mid-60’s until her health started to decline.

She could often be seen as a greeter or working with the senior ministries, and was also a part of the Sarah’s Circle bible study group. Sally often helped with the Annual Community Christmas Dinner and was apart of the Women’s Chorus as well. Along with her service at the church, Sally spent years volunteering at the Salvation Army and as a receptionist and escort at the Veterans Hospital for 10 years.

She felt close to and deeply cared for the veterans she served. In her spare time, Sally enjoyed singing and music appreciation of all forms. At times, she was known to break out in song while performing her daily activities.

She also enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and being a part of the Grand Island Garden Study Club from 1972 until its closure. Sally loved sketching and painting with various mediums, and was an avid Husker and Penn State fan. Sally always saw the best in people, and was a firm believer in “Do unto others as you would have done unto you”.

She enjoyed people and wanted to help them in any way possible. She was kind, compassionate, and considerate of others. Her religious beliefs were firm, as she was raised in a Christian household.

She often would quote scripture and lived a daily life close to God. In another time, she would have probably entered the medical field, but stayed home to raise two sons instead. Sally constantly tried to remain upbeat and optimistic even as her health declined in later years.

Those that will forever cherish her memory are her children, Mark (Katie Blackwell) Wenzel, Jr., of Grandy, NC. , John Wenzel of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; brother, William Jr. (Barbara) Hamp; niece and nephew Dana and David Hamp; and five great nieces and nephews. Sally was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter-in-law, Patricia; and two grandchildren.

She is now at peace, and in a better place, probably singing praise to the Lord. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Sally Suzanne Wenzel please visit our Sympathy Store.
