Obituary for Norman LeRoy Schmidt Norman LeRoy Schmidt, 83, born May 7, 1935, passed from this life at 3:32 pm Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Arrangements are entrusted to All Faiths Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at Grace Baptist Church, 1115 S Vine, Grand Island, at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 15.

Pastor John Hayes will officiate. Visitation from 10-10:30 am. Burial at Westlawn Cemetery, south side, 3826 W Stolley Park Rd.

Norm was born in Beatrice, NE to Otto and Bertha (Weber) Schmidt. He was raised on the family farm and attended Highland Center Country School through 8th grade, 1941 to 1949. He attended Courtland High School through graduation, 1949 to 1953.

From graduation through 1958 Norm worked for Abel Construction and Dobson’s Brothers. He also worked for The Union Pacific Railroad as a lineman and never stopped loving trains. In December 1958 he married DeeDee Coots from Lincoln, NE.

Norm and Dee raised two sons, Jeffrey born 1963 and Scott born in 1966 and they were married through 1975. Norm went on to work for Nebraska State Penitentiary as a guard 1958-1959; Robert’s Dairy doing plant labor and worked in the sales department 1960-1963; Hyster Lift Company in Danville, IL as plant laborer 1963-1970. Soon after, Norm found his “niche” as an owner/operator of an over the road Semi Rig and did this for 14 years.

In 1980 Norm married Arlene Winslow; they were married through 1984. During their marriage, Norm opened a café in Beatrice as 1/2 owner/operator and did this for three years. Following the café, Norm was employed at Goodyear Rubber Company of Lincoln, NE where he worked through retirement.

In 1996 he married Donna Flint. After Norm’s retirement he and Donna moved to Grand Island and lived the rest of their lives there. After retirement Norm worked part-time for Grand Island Public Schools as a janitor and a van driver.

Shortly before his passing, Norm resided at Tiffany Square Rehabilitation and Care Center of Grand Island, where he received the best of care. Norm was preceded in death by his mother (1907-1997) and father (1905-1975) and sisters, Cherrie Hansel in 1996 and Roberta Yott in 2002. Norm, while married to DeeDee lost two infant sons and two infant daughters.

His wife, Donna, passed away in 2016. He also lost a great grandson in 2018. Norm is survived by his two sons, Jeff and Scott and their families; several nieces, nephews, stepchildren, grandchildren, uncles, cousins, many friends and special neighbor, Cesar.

Norm attended Grace Baptist Church in Grand Island beginning in the year 2000. In 2017 he was baptized and became a member of the church. Grace Baptist Church was a place that Norm and Donna were loved and cherished.

The pastor and the members of the church always went above and beyond to love and care for both of them right up to the time that each of them passed away. Our entire family will be forever grateful. A special thank you to his niece, Jeanne, who cared for him and learned to love him in his final years, through his last breath.

She is grateful to her husband, Paul, and her family for their support throughout. Also, to “Katie” (Kaitlyn Burdett), thank you for being there until the end and never forget what Norm taught you. All of the children at Grace Baptist Church were very special to Norm and made a difference in his life.
