Obituary for Shirley Lee Wagner Shirley Lee Wagner, 82, of Chapman passed away on December 25, 2018. Service and celebration of Shirley’s life will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. Reverend Edgar L. Schambach Jr. will officiate.
Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery. Visitation is from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Shirley was born March 26, 1936 on the family farm at Dannebrog, the daughter of Carl and Minnie Rief.
Growing up on the farm, Shirley was her father’s “hired man” while her brother was in the service. She graduated from Dannebrog High School and attended Kearney State Teachers’ College receiving her teaching certificate. She taught school at Dannebrog, Stolley Park and Chapman Public Schools.
On February 15, 1959, Shirley married Lloyd “Bud” Wagner. The couple made their home near Chapman, and she worked alongside her spouse caring for the animals and spent many days doing fieldwork. Over the years she had various employment off the farm, including Cowton Insurance Agency, Consumer Credit, Grand Island Independent and the Census Bureau.
A member of the Lutheran faith, Shirley was confirmed and baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Dannebrog and attended St. Pauls Lutheran Church. She also attended the United Methodist Church in Chapman and was a member of the Methodist Chapman Ladies group. Shirley enjoyed included taking care of her many flower gardens and extensive vegetable gardens; traveling and genealogy.
Over the years, Shirley had adopted many cats and dogs, and enjoyed their companionship and devotion. She was an avid oil painter. Those who will cherish her memory include her children, Leland Wagner of Denver, CO, Lynnett Wagner of Omaha and Lorene Hetherington of Dublin, OH; two wonderful grandchildren, Ashley Morgan Hetherington and William Lloyd Hetherington; sister-in-law, Loretta Wiese (Derald Deselms) of Grand Island; along with numerous extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, in 2015; her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Wallace and Irene Rief; and sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Mark Petersen. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Methodist Hospital Foundation- Cancer Care Center, St. Pauls Lutheran Church, or Chapman United Methodist Church.
