Obituary for Walter M. Kapinos Walter M. Kapinos, 97, a Chicopee resident for over 90 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Holyoke Health Care Center. Born August 31, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Wilk) Kapinos. A graduate of Chicopee High School, Walter was a US Army veteran of WWII, serving his country in the European Theater of Operations, including Normandy.

He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, and was a Purple Heart recipient for injuries sustained during battle. Most recently, in December 2015, he was awarded the prestigious Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor. Walter was a lifelong communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop & Martyr and retired after many years of service at Savage Arms Manufacturing.

He was an avid Red Sox fan and played the trumpet. The highlight of his life was enjoying Polish music and polka dancing with his wife, Stella. Walter was predeceased in 1992 by his beloved wife, Stella J. (Regula) Kapinos, and is survived by his loving daughters, Gayle Engle of Florida, Maralee Smith and husband Milford of New Jersey, and Shelley Milbier of Massachusetts; four cherished grandchildren, Tricia Bouchie, Daniel Vickery, Ashley Smith, and Andrew Robert; and seven cherished great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Stella Kapinos and Josephine Kapinos. Walter’s family wishes to express their deepest gratitude and appreciation for the exceptional care and love that was provided to Walter and them as he made Holyoke Health Care Center his home for the past seven years, and give special thanks to Leslie Lebron, CNA and Tom Accomando, Administrator. Calling hours for Walter will be on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front Street, Chicopee from 9-10:45 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Stanislaus Basilica at 11 AM.

Burial with military honors will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. To honor Walter’s love and caring for children, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959. Upcoming Events Visitation , NOV 9.
