Obituary for Waunita Maxson Hazel Waunita Maxson, age 95, of Winterset, Iowa passed away June 1, 2018, in Winterset, Iowa. Waunita was born July 1, 1922 in Chariton, Iowa, the daughter of Leah Truman and Lawrence C. McVey. Waunita graduated from Knoxville High School in Knoxville, Iowa in 1940, and was married to Rodney Lynn Maxson on January 17, 1941, in Newton, Iowa.

Waunita raised her three children: Geneva Hawthorne-Helm (husband Richard) of Winterset, Iowa; Judy Carney (husband Joseph) of Winterset, Iowa; Michael Maxson (wife Connie) of Peoria, Arizona, and foster daughter Shirley Norris (husband Donald) of Des Moines, Iowa. Waunita lived in and around the Des Moines area until moving to the Winterset area in 1976. For many years after retirement, Waunita and Rodney would spend winters in Arizona with their son and come back to Winterset to spend summers with their daughters.

Waunita enjoyed crochet, puzzles, collecting dolls and gardening. She loved being outdoors and working around the yard. Until recently, Waunita could be found out mowing and raking any time she felt the yard needed attention.

She loved spending time with her children, 15 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Waunita was preceded in death by her parents, husband Rodney, sisters Mary (Katherine) Drew and Alberta McMullin, son-in-law Richard Helm and granddaughter Darcina O’Brien. A Celebration of Life will be held on Waunita’s birthday, July 1, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Winterset Seventh-Day Adventist Church where Waunita was a member.
