Wayne Hogberg, 87, of Burlington, died at 3:06 PM Saturday, January 5, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington. Born October 28, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Joe and Ethel Hogberg. He married Joan Beverly Holst on May 6, 1951 in Burlington.

Wayne worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for 30 years before his retirement. Wayne was a 1949 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from January 16, 1951 until February 28, 1983.

Following his service in the Korean War, Wayne served in the National Guard for 25 years. During his time in the military, he received several honors including, the Bronze Star with V, Korean Service Medal with 2 Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of First Christian Church.

He enjoyed boating, fishing and woodworking. Wayne was elected mayor of Burlington in 1972, and served for 10 years. He was a member of the Burlington City Council for four years and once served as the Chair of Steamboat Days.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of Burlington; three sons, Shawn Hogberg of Chandler, AZ, Scott Hogberg of St. Peters, MO, and Steven Hogberg of Port Saint Lucie, FL; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Hogberg of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Susan; and two brothers, Harold and Carl Hogberg. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2019 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The funeral service for Mr. Hogberg will be 11:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2019, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.

A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the burial. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
