Obituary for William Dean Popplewell William Dean Popplewell, 84, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 4, 2018, in his home surrounded by family. Dean was born in Jamestown, Kentucky to Dr. James Roscoe Popplewell and Alma McClure Popplewell. He graduated from Jamestown High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army, including deployment to Korea, specializing in radio communications and Morse code.

Dean attended the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University, where he received a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Arts. On December 22, 1963 he married Carolyn Minor of Lebanon, KY, celebrating their nuptials in a record winter storm event. Dean was employed by Jefferson County Public Schools as a chemistry teacher at Westport High School and Eastern High School, retiring in 1989.

He was a voracious reader and always eager to learn, a die-hard UK Wildcat fan regularly traveling for football games and providing many a tailgate feast for his daughters and friends. Dean also enjoyed family vacations, visiting National Parks, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Minor Popplewell; daughters, Dr. Leslie Popplewell (Bob Melisso) of Monrovia, CA and Cynthia Popplewell of Nashville, TN; two grandchildren, Robert Dean and Baxter Lee Melisso; brother, Dr. Howard Kent Popplewell of Jamestown, KY; and niece, Sandra F. Popplewell and nephew, Dr. Howard James Popplewell (Johnna) also of Jamestown, KY, as well as extended family and friends.

There will be a visitation from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, East Louisville, 40243. A graveside service will be held at a later date. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hosparus Health of Louisville in Dean’s name.
