Winifred L. “Winnie” (Gesell) Hartenbower, 82, of Ottawa, formerly of Tonica and Lostant, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Pleasant View in Ottawa. Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Hope Cemetery in Lostant. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home in Peru.

Winnie was born on March 9, 1936 and raised in Waterloo, Iowa to Clarence and May (Guyer) Gesell. She and her family moved to the Illinois Valley area in 1972. She had a long… Read More » career as a secretary working for the library at the University of Northern Iowa, the Cedar Falls, Iowa school system and for several other businesses.

After she retired, she spent time volunteering, quilting, designing and weaving baskets and gardening. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Peru. For the past three years, Winnie and her beloved dog ToTo resided at Hearthstone Assisted Living, part of Pleasant View in Ottawa.

Winnie cherished her time at Hearthstone and enjoyed her life there, especially her friendship with Stanley. She is survived by her children, Rebecca M. (Dale) Jacobson of Peru, Jeffrey D. (Tammy) Bradfield of Winnebago, Susan C. (Steve) Urban of Madison, WI and Steven R. Bradfield of Lostant; her grandchildren, Nick, Amber, Thomas, Lucas, Maxwell, Madeline and Molly; eight step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly A. Miller of Cedar Falls, IA; a brother, Thomas Gesell (Judy) of Tiger, GA and her most beloved dog, ToTo. Winnie was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Richard C. Bradfield; her second husband, Frank L. Hartenbower and two brothers, James Gesell and William Gesell.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and CNAs at Pleasant View for their care, OSF Hospice and especially Dr. Koganti for her compassion and support. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association National Headquarters, 225 N. Michigan Ave. , Fl.
