Zanada Townes October 02, 1936 – December 23, 2018 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences Zanada Arnetta Bush Townes was born on October 2, 1936 in Stotesbury, West Virginia, to parents, Virginia Arillia Sorrell Bush and Arnold Cicero Bush, Sr. Zanada passed away on December 23, 2018 after a short illness. She was baptized at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Glen White, WV at a young age. As a young child she moved from West Virginia to New York.

She moved back to West Virginia as a teenager and graduated from Stratton High School in Beckley, WV in 1954. Zanada ventured back to New York which she called home for 63 years. She graduated from Bronx Community College with a Degree of Associate in Arts.

She was employed as a Medical Secretary for some years at Bronx Psychiatric Hospital. She later was promoted and worked at Manhattan Psychiatric until she retired. Mom was known for her beautiful smile.

She was loved by everyone. She raised and cared for her three children and many of her nieces and nephews. She also cared for many of the friends that her children brought home.

She was called “Ma Nada”, “Aunt Zanada”, “Mema” and “Grand Ma”. By her friends she was called “Red”, “Zee” or “Ms. T.” Mom didn’t belong to any church or social organization,f but she knew so many people and she impacted so many lives. Zanada was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia Arillia Sorrell Bush “Ma Virgie” and Arnold Cicero Bush, Sr. “Daddy Kool”; husband, Leonard L. Townes, Sr., known to his friends as “Lefty” and to all his nieces and nephews as “Daddy Leonard”; her brothers, Eldredge Alexander Sorrell “Skippy”, Samuel Eugene Bush “Sam”, Arnold Cicero Bush, Jr. “Fert”, Calvin Deleno Bush “Tabby” and Richard Wayne Bush “Dickie)”.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her sister, Betty Ann Bush Sutton of Bronx, NY; sisters-in-law, Wildreh L. Townes of Long Island, NY and Sadie Jackson of Beckley, WV; children, Lynnette V. Simpson (son-in-law, Herbert Simpson, Jr.) of Charlotte, NC, Leonard L. Townes, Jr. (daughter-in-law, Sandra Townes) of Peekskill, NY, Stanley B. Townes (daughter-in-law, Judith Townes) of New Rochelle, NY; grandchildren, Jazmine C. Simpson, Johnathan Townes, Shalise Townes, Whitney L. Townes, and Isaiah Townes; step grandson, Michael Clay; step granddaughters, Maryum Amir and Naeemah Amir; great grandchildren, Jeremiah Townes of Peekskill, NY and Zuri Benyamin Charlotte, NC; step grandchildren, Izaih Clay of Bronx, NY and Zoe Amir of New Rochelle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. She loved all.
