Obituary for Alexander J. Azary Alex Azary died on September 24, 2018. He was born to Reverend John and Marie Ludman Azary on July 6, 1920, in Philadelphia, PA. The family moved to Dayton, Ohio, in 1922, where Rev.
Azary assumed the pastorate of the First Hungarian Evangelical Church. Alex graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1937. He attended the General Motors Institute in Flint, MI as an engineering student.
Alex enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet, but due to a surplus of cadet trainees, he was given the opportunity to choose another venue in the Air Corps, and he enrolled in the flight radio operator training course. He graduated at the top of his class and was invited to stay on as an instructor. After six months, he decided that he wanted to volunteer for combat duty, to join his two younger brothers, who were headed overseas.
He served as a Flight Radio operator in a B24 heavy bomber crew in the 15th Air Force operating from bases in Italy, earning among other decorations, the Air Medal. On discharge from the military, he worked for the Trans World Airline in flight operations in New York. After his father died in October, 1949, Alex decided to return home to be with the family.
In 1953, he married May Hamlin of Pasadena, CA. He lost her to cancer in 1979. He married Janette Carroll in 1981, who survives.
Alex enjoyed the challenge of new and interesting job opportunities in his lifetime, having been a manufacturing engineer, a methods engineer at Argus Cameras, and Ford Motor Co., industrial engineer and cost estimator at Industrial Techtonics; Industrial engineer at UofM Plant department, and design engineer at Bendix Aerospace Systems- involved in the fabrication of the experiments that went to the moon. He also sold and raced sports cars successfully in the 1960’s. He worked in the field as an Enforcement Officer for the E.P.A, retiring in 1989.
Aside from his auto sports, he loved to fly, having owned several interesting aircraft. He was an avid Ham radio operator, with the call sign- W8OMT. Alex was deeply involved in model railroad activities in his later years and built an elaborate layout in his basement.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Mary May, two younger brothers Zoltan and Ernest and sister Adele Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Janette, a sister Belle Rowe and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, a private service will be held and he will be interred in the family plot in Dayton, Ohio.
