Obituary for Mark A. Gaffney Mark A. Gaffney, 67, of Ann Arbor, MI, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, after a valiant battle with colon cancer, on Thursday, September 13, 2018. Mark was born March 16, 1951, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to David Gaffney and Doris (Vogt) Gaffney Estep. He graduated from Huron High School, Ann Arbor, MI, class of 1969, and obtained his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Eastern Michigan University in 1974.
On August 1, 1970, Mark married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia (Foster), and together they raised two children, Mark and Megan. In March of 2018, after more than 43 years, he retired from Huron Valley Steel Corp. as Vice President, Controller, and Board Member.
In his free time, Mark enjoyed a love of food instilled by his mother, wine tastings, chasing that ever elusive hole-in-one golfing, traveling, and spending time with his family, especially his grandsons. He will be remembered for his “infectious” laugh. Mark is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cynthia (Foster) Gaffney, children Mark (Melissa Richter) Gaffney and Megan (Bryce) Davenport, grandsons Hudson and Braden Davenport; brother D. Bruce (Rebecca) Gaffney, niece Elizabeth Gaffney Lee, Jake and Jenna Lee; step-brother Michael (Marcia) Estep, nephew James Estep; and step-sister Julie (Tony Penglase) Estep, nephew Lachlan and niece Ellie Penglase; brother-in-law Frank (Dawn) Foster, niece Jamie Foster (Jason) Fletcher; sister-in-law Jeanine Foster, nephew Dennis Foster II, niece Patricia Foster (Jeff) Jones, nephew Don (Kris Grbavac) Annis, niece Jeanne Annis, and many other blended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents David Gaffney and Doris Gaffney Estep, step-father Samuel Estep, step-brother David Estep, his parents-in-law Frank and Betty Foster, and brother-in-law Dennis Foster. Cremation has taken place. A visitation for the family will be held Monday, September 24, 2018, from 10:00-11:30 a.m., at the Polo Fields Golf and Country Club, 5200 Polo Fields Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Colorectal Cancer Alliance, 1025 Vermont Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20005. Mark will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. We are left wondering if his first activity was to play euchre or golf with dear friends and family who greeted him at the end of his final journey.
Regardless, once our tears of sorrow have dried, we will be left with love and smiles provided by the wonderful memories he gave us, and he will live on forever in our hearts. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Mark A. Gaffney please visit our Sympathy Store.
