Obituary for Mrs. Anastasia “Yiayia” Ioannou Kopoulos Anastasia “Yiayia” Kopoulos, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, October 6, 2018 in her home in the arms of her daughter. A survivor of World War II and devout Othodox Christian, she came to the United States with her family from Greece on the last boat to pass through immigration at Ellis Island. She mothered so many in her 100 plus years that she is simply known best as “Yiayia” (Greek for grandma) to friends and family from Greenville and Westminster to Massachusetts and Koroni, Messinias.
We will all miss her loving heart, big brown eyes, witty stories, talented sewing, amazing homemade bread, love of books and above all, hearing her fervent prayers for each of us. Sustained be her faith in Christ, Yiayia will best be remembered each time we pray for her soul and for one another. May her memory be eternal.
She is survived by her sons: Peter Kopoulos (Sarah), William Kopoulos (Jenny); daughter: Eva “Litsa” Tempenis; daughters-in-law: Eleni Theodorakopoulos and Fofo Kopoulos; grandchildren: Anastasia, John, Connie, Harry, Maria, Anastasia, Patty, John, Peter, Alexis, and their spouses; great-grandchidlren: Michael, Christina, Anthony, Alicia, Bella, Koula, Gianna, Mario, Eva, John, Annaleah, Joshua and Nicholas; and numerous relatives and friends who she treated as family in Greece and America. In addition to her parents, Christos and Evangelia Yokas, Yiayia was preceded in death by her step-father: Christos Spyropoulos; husband: John Theodorakopoulos; sons: Charles Theodorakopoulos, Christos Kopoulos; daughter: Olga Theodorakopoulos; and son-in-law: George Tempenis. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Davenport Funeral Home.
The visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with the Trisagion held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at St. George Greek Othodox Cathedral in Greenville. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral with burial to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville. A memorial luncheon will be held at St. George Hellenic Center immediately following the burial.
