Obituary of Barbara Murphy Barbara Ann Murphy (nee Walsh) of Nanuet, NY, died unexpectedly in Rhode Island Hospital on June 29, 2018, in Providence, RI, at the age of 81. Barbara was born on August 6, 1936, in New York, NY, to Ann and Arthur Walsh. She graduated from Hofstra University in 1952 with a degree in English.

She married John Francis Murphy on February 20, 1965. Barbara moved with her family to Rockland County after two years of living in Mount Vernon, NY, and would spend the rest of her life there. Barbara Murphy had a career in education: first in Madison, WI, and then Golden, CO, before moving back to New York in 1964.

From 1980 to 1984, she taught English at Saddle River Day School in Saddle River, NJ. After a brief stint teaching English and Social Studies at Clarkstown South High School, she left teaching for good and worked in the Publications and Small Business Administration departments at Rockland Community College from 1986 until 2002. In retirement she had an active social life, including with the Shakespeare Group of Nyack, the Monday Study Class of Nyack and as a volunteer for NAMI Rockland.

She was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Parish in Nanuet for fifty years, where she taught CCD for many years and served as lector. Barbara Murphy is survived by her sisters, Monica Brown and Susan Jepsen, her children, Daniel Murphy and Maryvance Morrisroe, and her grandchildren, Jack and Tess Morrisroe. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018, at St. Anthony’s Shrine Church, located at 36 W Nyack Rd, Nanuet, NY 10954.

Rev. Joseph J. Deponai will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Barbara’s life.
