Obituary of Barry Newsom Barry Shorter Newsom, 76, Indianapolis, passed away at 1:45 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019. He was born in Fort Wayne on June 13, 1942, and was the only son of Ira and Catherine (Gulliford) Newsom. He was raised in Marion and graduated from Marion High School in 1961.

Barry was an avid baseball player and excelled in high school football. He and his father were accomplished horsemen and often participated in local parades and horse shows. After graduating from high school, Barry joined the United States Army.

When he returned to Marion, he was employed at Dana Corporation, where he was a machinist. Barry moved to Portland, Oregon, and was employed by Boeing Corporation. He also became an enthusiastic golfer!

Barry was also a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and a Brown Belt in Judo. He was still in good standing and practiced over 20 years. Barry accepted Christ at an early age at Allen Temple AME Church in Marion.

He was actively involved in church with Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon, where he was actively involved with the “Cell Gathering” under the leadership of Pastor James Martin until his health prevented his participation. He is survived by his step-daughter, Perpetual (Anthony) Clanton-Strickling, Indianapolis; 2 grandsons, Kelly Ray Singleton, Jr., and Dante Singleton; 5 granddaughters, Felicia Tackett, Shantay LaTour, Victoria Singleton, Francisco Lopez, and Tiffany Williams; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; all of Portland, Oregon Barry had one son, Kelly, who is deceased.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Louise Newsom, on December 15, 2015. He lovingly raised two grandchildren, Kelly Ray and Felicia. The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. to 12 noon with Barry’s funeral service beginning at 12 noon on Friday, February 8, 2019, at VA Protestant Chapel, 1700 E. 38th St., Marion, IN.

Pastor Kenneth Elliott will be officiating with burial following at Marion National Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave. , Marion, IN.
