Benny Lee Powell, December 29, 1938 — February 19, 2019

Benny Lee Powell, 80, of 95 Shoreline Circle, Penhook, VA, died Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Sovah Health of Martinsville after a decline in his health for the past twelve months. Benny was born in Callands, VA, on December 29, 1938, a son of the late Noel Austin Powell and Anna Gregory Powell. He lived most of his life in the Mount Hermon community of Pittsylvania County, and since his retirement had lived at Smith Mountain Lake.

Benny retired in 1996 after a very successful career at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, VA. He enjoyed his Cessna 172 and many hours of flying, restoration of early Ford Mustang, golfing and fishing with many friends, spending time with his sons at VIR and lake living at SML.

On December 27, 1960 he married Ellen Jo Willis Powell, who survives. In addition to his wife, of the residence, Benny is survived by two sons, Benny L. “Benjy” Powell, Jr., and wife Beth, of Danville, VA, and Robert Dale Powell, and wife Elizabeth, of Blairs, VA; three grandchildren, Benny L. “Trey” Powell, III, Brooke Elizabeth Powell, and fiancé, Michael Hatchett, and Alexandra Wray Powell; a great grandson, Benny L. Powell, IV; and a brother, Al Powell, and his wife Ann, of Danville, VA. Benny was predeceased by a sister, Marie Jefferson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Stan Parris and the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.

A private interment will follow at the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Callands, VA. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. and at the residence at other times, 95 Shoreline Circle, Penhook, VA. Also, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Cool Branch Volunteer Fire Squad, P.O. Box 54, Penhook, VA 24137.
